Here ACFN provides toolkits for community leaders who want to spearhead programs
or enhance existing ones to help the obesity fight. A nutrition guide, “Charting
a Healthy Course,” which was designed in collaboration with Blue Cross
and Blue Shied Association, is also available. Other publications offer resources
on nutrition and physical fitness.
Obesity runs high in minority communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 60.1 percent of African-American men and 78 percent of African-American women are identified as overweight. Additionally, 28.8 percent of African-American men and 50.8 percent of African-American women are classified as obese. Rates of obesity among African-American teens stands at 27 percent. ACFN has developed “Fun, Food and Fitness,” an eight week program used by leaders in African-American communities to keep children and their families active and eating right.
