TOM BARANOWSKI, Ph.D.
Tom Baranowski, Ph.D. is Professor of Pediatrics and leader of the Behavioral Nutrition group, with the USDA funded Children's Nutrition Research Center, Department of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. Tom received his undergraduate degree in Politics from Princeton University ('68) and his masters ('70) and doctorate ('74) in Social Psychology from the University of Kansas.
Tom is principal investigator for three currently funded grants: the Houston site of the Studies to Treat Or Prevent Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes (STOPP T2D) multi-site prevention trial (a U01 grant with middle school students funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive, and Kidney Diseases); a subcontract to an SBIR grant (to develop two interactive multimedia behavior change games for 12 to 15 year olds funded by an U44 from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive, and Kidney Diseases); and the PROP sensitivity study (an R01 grant from the NCI on the relation of PROP sensitivity (a genetically determined phenotype) to obesity among diverse elementary and high school children).
Tom is co-investigator on other funded projects including a parenting intervention with African-American families of 8 year old girls using the Internet to promote FJV consumption. Tom serves on twelve peer reviewed professional journal editorial boards. He is Founding President of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.
He is author or co-author of over 180 peer-reviewed articles, 12 non-peer reviewed articles, 18 book chapters, two editions of a textbook on methods of evaluation for health promotion programs and editor of four special issue volumes.
