FIGHTING FAT WITH EDUCATION AND FOOD-INDUSTRY COOPERATION

The Miami Herald
By Susan Finn
March 25, 2004

The March 15 editorial "Fighting the nation's fat epidemic" correctly asserts that the war on obesity requires a coordinated effort. To tackle obesity, we must dig deep to strengthen fundamentals in our communities, schools and families. These include the importance of smart nutrition choices and staying physically active. Obesity is rooted in intricate biological, cultural, psychological and social dynamics, which is why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to staying healthy.

The government's recently unveiled public-awareness campaign is a step in the right direction. It embraces the basic elements of a healthy lifestyle: smart eating and increased physical activity. Countless studies indicate that there is one prevention formula that works: Reduce calories and exercise. Sound obesity-reduction programs address both sides of the healthy-lifestyle equation.

The food and beverage industry is intensifying efforts to provide a wide range of nutritious product choices. It also is committed to communicating clearly in labeling, packaging and advertising to enable consumers to make informed choices.

Reversing obesity trends and improving Americans' health require a balanced and comprehensive strategy that fosters informed nutrition decisions and physical activity.
