PEOPLE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WEIGHT MAINTENANCE

The Roanoke Times

I couldn't agree more with the conclusion of your Nov. 16 editorial on obesity, "The battle over the bulge," stating that individuals are responsible for their nutritional and fitness choices.

Research consistently demonstrates that people recognize that they are ultimately responsible for maintaining a healthy weight. They just want clear information and a little direction.

And the strategy for obesity policy should be as straightforward as the formula for weight loss - reduce calories and increase physical activity.

As your newspaper suggests, the government can help play an important educational role by advocating policies that help consumers make informed choices.

Additionally, efforts by all stakeholders, including the fitness and food and beverage industries, can provide inspiration, innovation and promotions to help consumers meet their own health goals.

Working together to foster good eating habits and an active, balanced lifestyle, we can make a difference.
