Blackburn Points to Nutrition Knowledge Gap A recent article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., emphasized the critical role physicians can play in helping patients understand dietary guidelines and energy balance. The article states, “As many as 90 million Americans lack basic skills needed to access, understand and use health information and services to make healthy dietary choices.” Blackburn is a member of the ACFN Advisory Board and associate director of the division of nutrition at Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, Blackburn is the chief of the nutrition/metabolism laboratory, and director of the center for the Study of Nutrition Medicine, which are affiliated with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an internationally renowned expert in the fields of obesity and clinical nutrition.
