STATEMENT FROM THE AMERICAN COUNCIL FOR FITNESS AND NUTRITION

Washington, D.C., January 22, 2003 - Today's announcement from Secretary Tommy Thompson that HHS is significantly increasing funding for efforts to combat diabetes, obesity and asthma through state and community programs in health education and prevention is welcome news for all of us who are concerned about the health and fitness of our nation.  In this effort, Secretary Thompson and HHS are part of the growing consensus among public health, medical and education professionals that these health problems can be more effectively addressed through prevention efforts stressing education and support for achieving a balanced and healthier lifestyle. More and more, research shows that long-term solutions to obesity, overweight and their associated health concerns have to promote both daily activity and better nutritional habits.  While this funding will be available to existing programs, it will also stimulate new initiatives at the state and local levels that can help educate and motivate communities and individuals to achieve their own individual balance.  We look forward to working with HHS and these programs to improve America's health.
