NATIONAL FITNESS AND NUTRITION ORGANIZATIONS TO HIGHLIGHT HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS IN ARKANSAS

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Council for Fitness and Nutrition (ACFN), in collaboration with the National Association for Health and Fitness (NAHF), is launching a panel discussion series, "Trends, Resources and Inspiration for Understanding and Maintaining Physical Health" (TRIUMPH) on March 15th, 2005 in Little Rock. TRIUMPH was developed to convene organizations that are empowering people to embrace healthier lifestyles and share information about practical and sustainable solutions to obesity. Joe Quinn, Policy Advisor, Arkansas Office of the Governor, will be the keynote speaker, and Dr. Fay Boozman, M.D., M.P.H, Director, Arkansas Department of Health, will provide an update on the progress being made across the state in helping Arkansans adopt and sustain healthier lifestyles.

The panel discussion will bring together local and national representatives from government, non-profit organizations and corporations to discuss:

  • innovative health and wellness solutions across the state of Arkansas;
  • ideas for how organizations can develop health and wellness initiatives;
  • how organizations in Arkansas can become part of a national dialogue with others who are committed to helping people live healthier lives.

On the panel will be: Phil Haberstro, President, National Association for Health and Fitness; Jean-Paul Francoeur, Chairman of the Arkansas Governor’s Council on Fitness; Dr. Ronni Chernoff, Director, Arkansas Geriatric Education Center; Dr. Margaret L. Bogle, Executive Director of the USDA Delta Nutrition Intervention Research Initiative; and Terri Conder-Johnson, Chair of the 2005 Little Rockers Kids Marathon.

“ACFN is seeking to highlight the progress that has been made across the state of Arkansas in building awareness about how to achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle. This is the goal of the TRIUMPH initiative – to let people know there are programs that are making a positive impact on health and wellness. Through collaboration, we can learn about what's working and share ideas with others who are committed to helping people improve their physical health,” stated Dr. Susan Finn, chair of ACFN.

Following the panel discussion, representatives from several other programs that are making an impact in health and wellness in Arkansas will share insights on what has inspired and motivated people of all ages to adopt better nutrition habits and become more physically active. Programs range from those targeted at promoting healthy and active lifestyles for young girls to a corporate fitness challenge program aimed at encouraging workplace wellness.
