Building Healthy Lifestyles Early in Our Nation’s Youth: A Call to Action
Parents and caregivers, health care professionals, communities, and children themselves share the responsibility in developing healthy lifestyle habits early. The purpose of this position paper is threefold: To provide an overview of the role and responsibility of parents and caregivers and children themselves for diet and physical activity choices and habits; 2) to describe existing expert recommendations for preventing childhood overweight and obesity; and, 3) to outline priority areas that support attaining achievable solutions to the prevention of childhood obesity.
Working Together to Tackle Obesity: Roles, Responsibilities and Opportunities for Communities
The role of the community in helping (or hindering) weight management success is commonly overlooked. Three aspects of community life in particular—the workplace, leisure time and neighborhood infrastructure—can have a significant impact on food and physical activity choices. Government programs and community initiatives around the country are making critical resources for healthy living available to the public.
